The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Department of  Computer Science, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position at the Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence”.

What are the principles of intelligence, shared by all forms of intelligence, no matter whether artificial or biological, whether robot, computer program, human, or animal? And how can we apply these principles to create intelligent technology? Answering these questions - in an ethically responsible way - is the central scientific objective of the Cluster of Excellence Science of Intelligence (https://www.scioi.de), where researchers from a large number of analytic and synthetic disciplines - artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, psychology, educational science, neuroscience, and philosophy - join forces to create a multi-disciplinary research program across universities and research institutes in Berlin. Interdisciplinary research projects have been defined (https://www.scienceofintelligence.de/research/projects), which combine analytic and synthetic research and which address key aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence.

Working field

Project: Observational learning in children and artificial agents (P59)

Project Leads: Marcel Brass (lead PI), Verena Hafner, Julia M. Rodriguez Buritica

Description of the proposed project:

In the current research project we will investigate observational learning in children and artificial agents. We will first create a foraging scenario in virtual reality (VR) that can be used for experimental studies with human and artificial agents. Then we use VR to investigate how observed motor behavior, actions and outcomes of others are integrated in children and formalize them in computational models. After that, we will implement these formalized dynamics of observational learning into artificial agents to investigate observational learning in human and artificial agents. And apply this knowledge to more complex learning environments (by including a-priory observed characteristics of others such as their trustworthiness) in the future.

Description of individual project:

The researcher will program a VR setup that can be interfaced with humans and artificial agents, develop computational models for learning artificial agents, integrate findings from human experiments and perform experiments with artificial agents under varying conditions.

Requirements:

  • completed academic degree and doctoral degree (PhD) (desired) in computer science, robotics, machine learning or a related field and a proven background in:
    • Cognitive or developmental robotics
    • Computational modeling and ML

The successful applicant should have:

  • strong programming skills (preferably in Python)
  • experience with VR-programming (Unity) are additional assets
  • Scientific track record
  • strong interest in interdisciplinary research and to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • excellent English language skills
